Time for a Little Fun

Time for a Little Fun 1

Yesterday I really did need a couple hours escape from all the madness.  Between the hassle of my upcoming move, and the not so subtle undercurrent of crazy in the news, I've been feeling pretty stressed.  I almost didn't go out yesterday, but I knew that even if we saw nothing, it would be a couple hours of down time I desperately needed.

As it turned out, we caught up with a couple frisky whales doing what whales do, and the dolphins that usually get pretty excited and love to hang around whales doing what whales do, and got some really great photos of gray whales in the process.  I haven't seen a lot of the drone footage taken by the two drone operators on the ship.  They did Instagram one labeled "goodnight kiss", and I suppose that the reason they didn't post more is that there is a little squeamishness sometimes about posting animals mating, assuming, of course, that's what they were doing.  It's not something we could determine with 100% certainty from the boat, but it's something I'd be very willing to place a bet on.

Anyway, here are some of my photos:

Gray Whale starting a roll

Two whales, one with pectoral fin up

this is a cropped version of the next photo, the whale is looking right at us!

One of the whales lifting their head out of the water

classic fluke photo, not the best one, but the one I uploaded here, so...

another classic fluke shot, same whale. (you can tell by the markings)

Dolphin out ahead of the whales

Two whales, one of them blowing

I like this shot (and the others in this series which I haven't uploaded yet) because you can see the dorsal knuckles.  Gray whales do not have dorsal fins.
