A gratuitous picture of an elephant seal and political uncertainty

This elephant seal photo, taken last year at Pt Reyes National Seashore, has nothing to do with this post, except that I'm looking forward to going down to Pt Reyes with my new camera in a couple weeks and taking new photos of elephant seals.

I always try to keep something to look forward to in mind.  It's my version of a gratitude practice:  I can get through whatever it is when I know that there will be whales, elephant seals, cultural festivals, and very low tides coming up.

I can almost forget that the nation is a hot mess, and the incoming administration poses risks that will impact my healthcare, my income, my ability to remain housed, some of my rights, and the rights of my children, as well as the ability for some of my immigrant citizen relatives and friends and my non-Christian friends to feel safe in this county.  I know that societies fall.  I didn't think I'd be around when this one did.  Now I'm not sure at all.

So I do certain things:  I march when there's a march.  I vote.  I teach other people about things I value (especially the environment) and I try to be in the safest place I know, and encourage my kids and friends to be someplace safe. And I am trying to get a lifetime in before January 20th--

that's going to involve whales, tidepools, elephant seals, and a move back to Petaluma.
