Reclaiming my Anthem

I must have some gypsy blood mixed in with my dad's Hungarian... or it's just that I have an almost insatiable appetite for new experiences, new places, and fresh vistas. The point is that the last few years without a car has been tough, and now I find myself really looking forward to the trips this month, including this morning's trip starting out to Florida.

Today I'm reclaiming the song that I used to consider my anthem: On the Road Again.

Still uncertain of the plans for this trip, longing to take a detour on the way home to go to Atlanta to see the whale sharks (which will add another day or two to my trip) I'm already looking ahead to Tay's move to Las Cruces, which now will involve an overnight trip, so that I can take move her in during the school's move in party on a Sunday, and still get her to financial aid, student support services, and Social Security on Monday, while hopefully fitting in an hour in a hot spring in Truth or Consequences with Cay, as well as a trip into the Gila to see the cliff dwellings, which we missed on our last trip.

Of course all of this will depend on the finances, and the timing, since we also have trips back to el Rancho de las Golondrinas planned for the weekend of the 11th. And while there's a volunteer appreciation dinner at the BioPark on the 7th, If I can afford it, I'd gladly trade that event for a view of a whale shark.

Whale sharks and the Gila Cliff Dwellings are both on my bucket list, and while I'll be close to the Gila on other occasions when I'm transporting Tay back and forth from school, It's less likely that I'll be closer to Atlanta than Tallahassee... at least for a long while.

We're leaving late today. Despite Cay's excited exclamation that she'd like to leave at 5am and have me put in 16 solid hours of driving (can you tell she's never driven?) she refused to roll out of bed until after 6. I'm a little put out, but on the other hand, having slept in 2-3 hour shifts last night, perhaps the extra time in bed helped me out as well. At this point we're looking more at 7:30 - 8:00 departure time, but I can live with that.

Once again I can't guarantee a blog until we get to Tallahassee (and even then...) because now I'm not going to the better hotels along the way. I certainly can't afford the hotels the Zoo sends me to when I'm traveling! But I have to chose hotels that are (a) cheap and (b) take pets since we're traveling with Kali, who is, at this point, in her harness for a week now and partially leash trained.

We've traveled with Kali in harness and on leash before, but only had the leash to get her to go where we want her to during litter stops... thinking that she'd never train to the leash. She still leans back and sinks her claws in at times, but is getting better with the commands, and having finally found a cat treat she loves has helped out with that a lot.

ANYWAY, preparations are made, the bags are packed, and it's time to pack that one last bag: my computer bag, so...
