I feel a bit of a slug today (pun intended) for being so slow to post my PhotoHunt. If you read the next post, you'll know why.
I actually chose this photo in advance, it's one of the one's I'm proudest of. Sure, my daughter has better whale photos, but those whales are a half world away, came close to the boat, and breached several times. "My" whales were just bopping along down the coast.

What you see in the above photo is two blue whales breaking the surface of the water to breath. That triangular looking opening is where the whale breathes. Whales are mammals, which means they are warm blooded, give birth to live young, and nurse them. They also don't breath underwater or have gills.
These whales were spotted off the coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in CA where the kids and I took our first whale watching tour in August of '07. It was a bit of a surprise to see blues that far south, so we had a real treat. We had gone out expecting to see greys, but didn't see a single one. Our only grey sighting was a year ago Christmas Eve in Monterey Bay.
Aside from Tide Pooling, whale watching is my favorite thing to do. Trips cost anywhere from $20 to hundreds of dollars, depending on where you go and how long you're out. I've had two perfectly delightful trips (although I nearly froze my arse off during that December trip) and didn't pay more than $30 for either.
Whales, including blues, continue to be endangered due to loopholes in the international laws made to protect them.

That looks like fun and exciting. Never have done anything like that, but it is something that would interest me. Great photo and have a good weekend.
Cool photo! Great shot for 'heavy'. Mine is up too, come peek. Have a nice day.
Pictures are very cool. Would love to do something like that one day.
Have a nice weekend
Hey Dorid - over at tnchick - you've linked today's heavy with your narrow post last week. So when you click on your name on Heavy you go right to Narrow -- looking like you didn't post a heavy.
And what a great heavy! I posted the largest land mammal on mine and you've now posted the largest mammal. Great minds....or something like that.
I love your blog -- glad you are mainstreaming -- I like to see the whole Dorid picture.
Thanks, TR, I'll head back and correct that!
Wow -- great shot!
Wonderful! Perfect photos for the theme. I wish I'd been there too.
Perfect for the theme. I love whale watching and have been to that very place.
Great picture and take on this week's theme! My 'heavy' is here.
That's HEAVY.. Whales!! Good Photo!!
lolz... i think they could be the heaviest of all animals (are they heavier than elephants? not sure)
i'm envious that you've seen one this close... :)
Whales are surely heavy. I have yet to go whale-watching.
My free for this week and heavy for last week are posted.
